Yole Updates 2007 MEMS Ranking

Yole Dévelopement updated its 2007 ranking of the 30 largest MEMS suppliers, adding Sanyo Electric to the list. With 2007 sales of $5.6B, the 30 largest companies account for an estimated 80% of the global MEMS market.

The MEMS business is rapidly growing, and an updated ranking of the 30 largest MEMS manufacturers in 2007 reflects the dynamics of the industry, according to a report by market research and consulting firm Yole Dévelopement (Lyon, France).

CEO Jean Christophe Eloy said notable changes to the 2007 ranking include the addition of Sanyo Electric Co. (Tokyo) as the 28th largest MEMS maker with sales of $50M, and adjustment of the No. 4 ranking for STMicroelectronics (Geneva). Yole issued its 2007 ranking in late January, then slightly revised the revenue amounts and added Sanyo in its June update, Eloy said.

Inkjet printhead maker Hewlett Packard (Palo Alto, Calif.), digital light processor (DLP) vendor Texas Instruments (Dallas) and German auto parts manufacturer Bosch retained the top three spots.

Nine companies had MEMS sales exceeding $200M in 2007, compared with only four companies two years ago. “The sales of the top 30 companies are growing at a lower rate compared to the MEMS industry [7% compared with 9%], indicating the strong vitality of the small and medium players,” Eloy said.

With 2007 sales of $5.6B, the 30 largest companies account for an estimated 80% of the global MEMS market, Eloy said.
